The Internazionali BNL dItalia features the best players at the Foro Italico in Rome. It is a well-known scene, placed at the climax of movies and theater plays. As his irritation reached its peak, Musashi suddenly appears and proceeds to break Seijuro’s arm with his bokuto. In the novel, Musashi deliberately arrived late to an arranged duel, apparently irritating Seijuro, who was the head of the Yoshioka Dojo at the time. The Yoshioka Dojo was a famous school of swordsmen, who during the Muromachi era taught kenjutsu and battle tactics to the Shogun’s family. Since then it has been made into movies, TV series, and comic books, making Musashi a legendary swordsman not only in Japan, but worldwide.Īs Musashi traveled around the country training, it is said that the 21-year-old chose the Yoshioka Dojo of Kyoto to test his skills against. “Miyamoto Musashi,” a novel written by Eiji Yoshikawa, was published as a serial by Asahi Shimbun from 1935 to 1939. Add to all of that that it is set in a cupcake shop run by three hunky professional football players and you have a really fun story! This was such a cute contemporary romance! It was a combination of the ‘enemies to lovers’ and ‘fake dating’ tropes, both of which I am a big fan of. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. * I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. For Boris Johnson, lying seems to be a personal characteristic almost divorced from anything he might achieve by it. Motive and opportunity are factors to be considered when looking at criminal behaviour and in anticipating security risks, as well as in public dishonesty. I depend to some extent on the Secret Barrister’s article in The Guardian last week called Against the law: why judges are under attack, but my point is not so much to preview the book as to talk slightly discursively about the age of lies.Īlong the way, we might ask why people lie, cheat and deceive. Daunt Books for £20 or for slightly less from Amazon. This is not a review of the book because I must wait like everyone else for publication on 3 September when it will be available from e.g. There is a tenuous connection with eDiscovery (the primary subject of this blog) in that the tricks and tools of public dishonesty include those which are familiar (or should be) to anyone engaged in civil or criminal discovery. Publication was held over from the spring, and the book arrives at a time of public dishonesty such as we have never seen before. The Secret Barrister’s second book Fake Law has as its subtitle “ The Truth About Justice in an Age of Lies“. Their heads are always full of mushy rhetoric, faulty logic and grim fucking resolve. For instance, when Kaaro senses a suicide bomber in a nearby crowd, he thinks: “I hate suicide bombers. Perhaps Thompson’s most impressive feat is his use of Kaaro’s psychic powers to assert unprovable facts. Thompson’s rendering of the “xenosphere,” a theoretical dimension into which psychic characters can project their consciousnesses, is nothing short of brilliant. Thompson’s debut novel brims with inventive and seamless worldbuilding, eloquent prose, a strong cast of powerful black characters, and cutting social commentary on the current geopolitical shift toward authoritarianism and post-colonial trauma. As Kaaro digs deeper and deeper into the source of the sensitives’ illness, his troubled past and riveting present come together to paint the picture of a horrifying future. Just as Kaaro meets a woman who could possibly make him happy, sensitives like him begin to get sick and die. Kaaro, a government security officer who was a criminal before becoming a soldier, is a “sensitive,” a rare breed of human endowed with psychic powers. It’s 2066, and in Nigeria, the town of Rosewater has grown up around a strange dome that heals whomever stands beneath it. When a detective with psychic powers begins to investigate a mysterious sickness plaguing those like him, he uncovers sinister truths that may very well call into question the survival of the human race. And because to tease out of the endearing, 3 1 / 2-hour “Torch Song” any modicum of satisfaction, a director must find his or her perfect Arnold, the nervy, needy, mouthy queen of Fierstein’s ambitions, to give voice to men who simply want to be who they are.Įxpressing this idea on a mainstream stage was a far more exotic pursuit in 1982, when “Torch Song Trilogy” opened at Broadway’s Little Theatre (later rechristened the Helen Hayes), with Fierstein playing Arnold and Estelle Getty as his tsunami-on-rye of a Jewish mother. Why, you ask? Because this actor of impeccable dryness and ridiculously thick hair is an Arnold Beckoff for all (theater) seasons. I say unto you that henceforward, the program of every new production of “Torch Song Trilogy” - Harvey Fierstein’s groundbreaking comedy of gay American aspiration - should contain the words “Brandon Uranowitz.” AND YES I know that sounds contradictory but that's how it was for me. (Because let's not beat around the bush, YES OF COURSE Jemma and Ryder end up together). So it's something that gave me a little pause and it's one thing that's holding me back from giving it a 5 star rating, although by the time I was finished I was so over the moon with how things ended up and how natural and believable Ryder and Jemma's relationship was, it was hardly in my mind. But apart from that, maybe the only glimpse we get of their actual hatred towards each other is in one short scene at the beginning. The reason that Jemma gave was totally grounds for hating someone and it made sense, as in yes I would be mad at a person if they did what Ryder did to Jemma and yes I would probably hate them too. But yeah, I think the hatred between was them was something that I needed to see a little more evidence of. I was not entirely convinced how much they really did hate each other, especially at the beginning and I guess, even now having finished the book, although given everything else that happened, it's a bit of a moot point now. The first thing is the hatred between Jemma and Ryder. Although yes, I did only give it four stars (4.5 stars if we're being technical) and that just about comes down to two teeny things that gave me some pause. |
